ITAMI JŪZŌ: TAMPOPO
Ja sitten syödään / 1985 / 115min / DCP
Fri 15.4.2016 klo 17:30 Malmitalo. Ala-Malmin tori 1 Helsinki

This film is bursting with the celebration of Japanese culinary culture, the plot seasoned with the sensuality of the scents and tastes of cooking. The name of the film and main character translate to dandelion, accentuating the endurance and efforts of our heroine in keeping a small noodle restaurant in business.

Itami Jūzō (1933–1997) has enriched Japanese film with his satirical and societal themes that concern the basics of human life: sex, death, food and money. His muse was Miyamoto Nobuko, who acted in altogether ten of his movies.

OISHII! JAPANESE DELICACIES

After last year’s pause, we are happy to welcome back the Japanese film series that has been with us since the founding of the festival. We begin with Shindō Kaneto’s existential black and white film Naked Island, continue with the culinary and satirical treat Tampopo by Itami Jūzō and finish the series with radical director Adachi Masao’s latest film Artist of Fasting. It offers us something completely different, namely a story about a hunger artist, based on the short story by Franz Kafka.
